From Corn Silk to Sunscreen: When Green Innovation Becomes Real Impact

Innovation often begins with a simple question: what if something we usually throw away could become something valuable?

That is exactly the spirit behind the inspiring innovation from Universitas Brawijaya, where a lecturer from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Dr. Rosalina Ariesta Laeliocattleya, S.Si., M.Si., successfully developed Hi-To-Go Sun Protector, a children’s sunscreen made with corn silk extract as a natural active ingredient.

What makes this innovation remarkable is not only the product itself, but the story behind it. Corn silk, which is often seen as agricultural waste, has been transformed into a high-value, environmentally friendly product. Through research, creativity, and collaboration with industry, something that was once overlooked has now become part of a skincare solution designed especially for children.

Turning Waste into Worth

This breakthrough is a powerful reminder that sustainability is not only about reducing waste. It is also about reimagining value.

In many agricultural communities, by-products such as corn silk are often discarded or underutilised. Yet through the right research and entrepreneurial mindset, these materials can be transformed into products that have environmental, social, and economic benefits. This is where green innovation becomes truly powerful: when science meets creativity, and when environmental awareness becomes a practical solution.

Dr. Rosalina’s work shows how universities can play a major role in creating sustainable change. Research does not have to remain inside journals or laboratories. It can move into the market, support industry, create new value chains, and inspire young people to see problems as opportunities.

Why This Matters for the Next Generation of Greenpreneurs

At the Academy of Entrepreneurs, this kind of innovation deeply resonates with the spirit of our EcoBoss Greenpreneurship Program, which was held last year to empower young people across Indonesia to develop environmentally conscious business ideas.

Through EcoBoss, students were encouraged to look at the world around them differently. They were challenged to identify environmental problems, understand community needs, and create business solutions that are not only profitable, but also responsible and impactful. The program was built on the belief that young people can become greenpreneurs: future leaders who use entrepreneurship as a tool to protect the planet and improve lives.

The innovation from Universitas Brawijaya is a beautiful real-world example of what greenpreneurship can look like. It proves that sustainable business is not just an idea for the future. It is already happening now, here in Indonesia.

A product like Hi-To-Go Sun Protector shows students that green innovation can come from local resources, local research, and local challenges. It also shows that waste is not always waste. Sometimes, it is an opportunity waiting for the right person to notice it.

From Education to Industry

One of the most exciting parts of this story is that the innovation has moved beyond research and entered the path toward industrial production. This is a major step because it shows the importance of connecting universities, researchers, industry partners, and entrepreneurial ecosystems.

For students and young entrepreneurs, this is an important lesson. A good idea needs more than creativity. It needs research, testing, collaboration, support, and the courage to bring it into the real world.

This is also why programs like EcoBoss are so important. They help young people build the mindset and skills needed to move from idea to action. They learn how to think critically, pitch solutions, understand sustainability, and develop business models that can create real impact.

Growing More Greenpreneurs for a Better World

As Indonesia continues to face environmental challenges and opportunities, stories like this give us hope. They remind us that the next big solution may come from something simple, something local, or something previously ignored.

We hope to see more innovations like this emerge across Indonesia: from schools, universities, communities, and young changemakers who are ready to think differently. We also hope that strong support from partners, including the Australian Government, can continue to help grow more greenpreneurs who are equipped to build sustainable solutions for the future.

Because when young people are given the right exposure, mentorship, and platform, they do more than create business ideas. They create possibility. They create impact. They help make the world a better place.

Congratulations to Dr. Rosalina Ariesta Laeliocattleya and Universitas Brawijaya for this inspiring achievement. Hi-To-Go Sun Protector is more than a sunscreen. It is a reminder that innovation can be born from the most unexpected places, and that sustainability becomes powerful when it reaches people’s everyday lives.

From corn silk to children’s skincare, this is the kind of green innovation the world needs more of.
