Australian Alumni Gala Makassar

On 23 January, the ballroom of Rinra Hotel Makassar was filled with warmth, stories, and a shared sense of purpose as the Australian Alumni Gala brought together graduates who once studied in Australia and are now shaping change and creating impact across Indonesia.

More than a formal gathering, the evening was a celebration of journeys, relationships, and the long lasting influence of international education. Alumni from diverse backgrounds, undergraduate degrees, masters programs, and short courses through Australia Awards and other Australian scholarships gathered in one place. Each person carried a different story, but all were connected by a transformative experience in Australia that continues to shape who they are today.

The evening opened with a vibrant and lively networking session, setting the tone for meaningful connection. Alumni exchanged stories, reconnected with old friends, and discovered new peers from different industries and regions. Conversations flowed naturally, reflecting strong sense of openness and shared values.

Throughout the room, alumni - led business stalls showcased ventures built after returning to Indonesia. From entrepreneurship to social impact initiatives, many alumni shared how their time studying in Australia influenced their mindset, leadership style and approach to problem solving and creating impact. It was a powerful reminder that global education has translated into entrepreneurship, social initiatives, and meaningful work across sectors.

As the night transitioned into the gala dinner, the focus shifted to reflection and recognition. Several outstanding alumni were honoured for their contributions to society, leadership, and professional excellence. These awardees were living proof that education does not end at graduation. It continues through service, responsibility and long term impact.

A Story Older Than Borders

One of the most moving moments of the night was the opening cultural performance. Presented by a local community, it told the story of Makassar ancestors who centuries ago travelled to Australia in search of sea cucumbers. It reminded everyone of the long standing relationship between the people of Makassar and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia.

This powerful moment reminded guests that the relationship between Indonesia and Australia extends far beyond modern diplomacy and education programs.

It is a connection rooted in shared ancestry, shared stories, and shared respect. A bond that continues to evolve through education and cultural understanding.
